What Steps Do I Take To Use Case Studies To Get Leads?

Lead generation for a business is the petrol pump or charging point for a car or van.  Without lead generation, businesses simply run out of business.

Case studies are a powerful tool that can help you showcase your company’s expertise, build credibility, and generate leads.  Well-targeted and prepared they make the links in your prospects’ thought process, connecting their needs to your offering.

In this blog, we will explore the steps you can take to use case studies to get leads.

Identify Your Target Audience

Before you start preparing a case study determine who your audience is going to be.  Will the case study that you are preparing draw in the prospects that you want to draw into your business?  Identifying who those prospects are and creating an avatar for them, will help you identify what their pain points are.  This is crucial for creating a case study that resonates with them, a case study that provides the solution to the problem they are trying to solve.

Target Audience

Conduct market research to gather information about your target audience and use this information to create a buyer persona or avatar. A buyer persona is a fictional representation of your ideal customer and includes information such as their demographics, goals, challenges, and motivations.  Consider the question, why are they going to buy my solution?

Choose a Relevant Case Study Topic

Once you have identified your target audience, choose a relevant case study topic to focus on a problem that your target audience is facing and show how your business has helped solve it for another customer. For example, if your target audience is small business owners, you could create a case study that showcases how your company helped a small business improve their online presence and increase their revenue.

Gather Data and Information

The next step is to gather data and information for your case study. This includes collecting data about your prospects’ target problem, and what might the cost of that problem be in money and time.  What data can you obtain about the solution you offer and have supplied to other customers to support the case study? What were the results achieved with your solution?

Be sure to use specific examples and data points to illustrate the impact of your solution. For example, if you helped a client increase their revenue or gross margin, include specific figures that demonstrate this increase, even if these are percentages if actuals cannot be used.

Create a Compelling Story

A compelling story is key to creating a case study that resonates with your target audience. Use storytelling techniques to create a narrative that engages the reader and shows the human side of the problem and solution.

Buying decisions are made on 80% emotion and 20% logic.  Consider what the emotions are that will lead to your prospect buying from you.  How will they feel when they read your case study?  How do you want them to feel to persuade them to buy your solution?  Create a narrative that engages those feelings.  Keep this narrative completely about the prospect, or the satisfied client, it is all about them and solving their problem.

Be sure to include quotes from your client that illustrate the impact of your solution and show the client’s perspective.

Showcase Your Expertise

Your case study is an opportunity to showcase your company’s expertise and establish credibility with your target audience. Be sure to highlight your company’s unique value proposition and what sets you apart from your competitors. Use the case study to demonstrate your company’s knowledge, skills, and experience in solving the problem your client was facing, but make this part of the narrative about your satisfied customer and your prospect as much as possible.

This is a difficult balance.  Your case study is an opportunity to build trust with your prospect.  To do this you need to be credible, show that you are reliable, and be likeable.  If your case study is too much about you and not enough about them and the solution they are looking for you will reduce their level of trust in you.

Promote Your Case Study

Once you have created your case study, the next step is to promote it to your target audience. Here are some ways to promote your case study:

  • Publish it on your website: Make your case study easily accessible by publishing it on your website. Be sure to optimise it for search engines so that it can be found by potential customers.
  • Share it on social media: Share your case study on your social media channels to reach a wider audience. Be sure to include relevant hashtags and tag any individuals or companies mentioned in the case study.
  • Use it in your email marketing: Include a link to your case study in your email marketing campaigns. This can help drive traffic to your website and generate leads.
  • Leverage paid advertising: Consider using paid advertising to promote your case study. This can help you reach a targeted audience and generate leads more quickly.
  • Use QR codes: on your marketing of the case study to track the marketing channels and measure which marketing channel is working best.  Invest more effort in the ones that work best.
Promote Your Case Study

Follow Up with Leads

Finally, it’s important to promptly follow up on the leads generated from your case study. Be sure to have a system in place for capturing leads and tracking their progress through your sales funnel. Once a lead has expressed interest in your company, reach out to them to provide additional information and answer any questions they may have. Use your case study as a conversation starter and demonstrate how your company can help solve their specific problem.

Conclusion

Using case studies to generate leads is a powerful way to increase your lead generation and show how you can provide a solution to your prospects’ problems.  By working through this process of identifying your target audience, selecting an appropriate case study topic for that solution, using the right data, and creating a compelling story that stirs the prospect’s emotions toward buying you can showcase your expertise.  Promoting the case study in the correct marketing channels and following up on leads promptly should have a positive impact on the level of new business you are getting.
